Walter -

Unless you have a roof with a lot of metal in it, it will work just fine 
in the attic.  Gaining some height over the outdoor antenna might make 
up for whatever signal loss occurs from the roof.  And if you have a 
shorter feedline with the antenna in the attic, that helps on 2 as 
well.  And attic antennas are saved from water, UV and possibly ice 
damage, depending on your weather. 

I have small 2 meter and 440 directional antennas on rotors in my attic 
as well.  Also have a 1/4 wave groundplane for 6 meters and have worked 
most of the US on SSB when the band is open.
