I have heard of similar ideas working very well.
Any large metal object at the end will work well for a "top cap". Even
radial like extensions. Also, by moving the coils out/in or
stretching/collapsing will change the tuning. I have read discussions on
whether stretching at the ends of the side so as to leave more coiled in
the middle (make like a centre loaded dipole), vs stretching towoards the
end like the helical wound ants (widerspacing out to narrower spacing, or
just making it stretch whatever is the best.
I have been toying with the idea of using one for a vertical and doing some
tuning by moving the ends apart/closer.
