Hi Bob -
I have one of the pre-production Comets here, given to me by another list member
and overall good BA buddy. I also kept all of my emails from Ed, since I was
gathering information from him on this and other items Clegg made in low
numbers.
Unfortuately the Comet never made it to production and of the 6(I
think)prototypes built, only one or two were completed. The one I have is
incomplete, perhaps 70% there. Resembles or more accurately matches the later
22'er MKs in size and layout, as well as the front panel and *not* the Venus as
many of us once believed. In fact, I've been looking for a non-functioning 22'er
to use as a parts donor for the Comet, at least to get it cosmetically complete.
My hope is to one day find circuit and component info for the Comet in order to
complete this one.
Ed admitted that his memory was a bit foggy about the Comet. He said there were
no surviving examples as they were tested to destruction, but either he or
someone else gave me info about the prototypes which appears to be accurate. Ed
said they were 'not ready for prime time' and were 'tested to destruction'. He
also told me that it was the two meter version of the Venus, which it may have
been electrically, but certainly not physically.
I've managed to put together a pretty good Clegg station so far, but I'd love to
hear whatever else you turn up in your search. I started the same journey a
couple years back, even planned to go spend some time with Ed, but I didn't get
there in time. The emails I exchanged with him as well as the ones from Bill Orr
are treasured items to me, though. Ed was good about sharing with the list and
donated much of his time and many manuals for scanning to the 6mt.com page. He
was really pleased to see the interest that those on the list had for his gear,
as well as the growing interest in general for the quality and craftsmanship of
the older US-made gear.
Let me know what I can do to help. I can snap a few digital pictures this
weekend of the Comet, but they won't make your jaw drop. I'm very thankful to
Warren for saving it and sending it my way. I *will* eventually complete it, if
only for display purposes. It's a very important piece of amateur radio history
and deserves to be preserved.
If anyone out there has a Clegg 22er MkII(?) that is in less-than-perfect
condition or otherwise unusable, please let me know. I need knobs, the case, and
a few other items for this project. I'd also like to find one in decent shape,
AM and/or FM model.
