 Dan,
I have no knowledge about those Kenwood VFO's.
A couple of things that are important:
1.) you need 8v pk or higher to drive these CE transmitters. More is better.2.) The incoming VFO mixes with a 9 Mhz rock, so a 5-5.5 Mhz VFO will give you 80M (f1-f2), and 20m (f1+f2).
To get the other bands, the BC-458 had to double (160m), or tripe (40m). Operation on 15m was a spurious nightmare, and operation on 10m required a 10m option for the BC-458 where a rock and converter was used to get on 10m. The BC-458 Conversion was really quite a spectacular design for the time period. The Lakeshore Bandhopper VFO improved upon this design, and is a find to be treasured.

A suitable VFO amplifier for a solid state VFO, or DDS is detailed in Sept 1991 CQ by Doug Demaw, W1FB. Other options are out there.

Subject: Kenwood VFO with CE 10A or 10B
Does anyone have any experience or information on using a Kenwood VFO-520
or VFO 820 with the CE 10A or 10B?
They are quite stable. I have at least 20 years of Electric Radio but have
not found much info on CE gear in there yet.
Thanks for any feedback.
