[Central-Electronics] 20-A SSB Question

This evening while working a station on 160 on 1850 kc  about 100 miles to
the south of me he couldn't hear me while on SSB. I switched the 20-A over
to AM and put in a few watts of carrier and he was able to hear me quite
well according to him. I switched back to SB1 position and he was unable to
hear me. I am using a HQ-170A for the receiver and I was able to hear my own
SSB signal on LSB while in the Cal position.  This has me puzzled while I
can hear my own signal on SSB but the station I was working could only hear
me when I was in AM mode.  I assume on the 20-A that SB1 equates to LSB and
SB-2 to USB?
