[Central-Electronics] WTB: 600L

Jim:

The 100V varies power by varying the master oscillator input level to the
first mixer. The 100V manual specifically states that this feature is
provided to accommodate amplifiers that require a reduced drive level. I
don't think signal degradation will be an issue with the 100V.

My take is that engineers who were smart enough to come up with the 100V and
600L would likely have foreseen that these two beasties would eventually be
used together :-). Neither operating manual indicates any particular
caution in that regard, other than the 600L manual giving instructions on
limiting amplifier DC input power to 600W on voice peaks. I believe that
the 600L and a suitably adjusted 100V will be a perfect match.

Your question about IM performance is a good one. I'll be interested to see
if you get a response.

Jim,

I am not familiar with how the 100V varies the power. In general though,
with
a SSB exciter, when you run at reduced power, the specifications of carrier
suppression, and spurious outputs all degrade. For example, with my old
FT757,
turning down the Mic gain so the PEP output was 10db down from maximum would

make the suppressed carrier go from say -50db to -40 db down. Since CE was
very
innovative, maybe the "continuously variable" nature of the 100v bypasses
this
kind of issue.

I wonder if anyone has done inter-modulation tests of the 600L? Looking at

mine when running AM, and watching the trapezoid pattern, there is a 'bump'
at
the carrier level. Other linear amplifiers I have do not do this. The 8877
based
linear amplifier has perfect walls of the trapezoid, and my 4 X 572B linear
has
a slight 'S' shaped curve to the trapezoid. The 600L has a unique signature.
Not
sure what that means though.

Hi Jim:

Thanx for your input. The power output of the 100V is continuously variable
between full output and 10 Watts via a front panel control. Since I plan to
dedicate the 600L to my 100V this should not be a problem.

Jim,

Good luck for your search. I was lucky to find mine. Also plan ahead on
how
you might match the 100V 100 watt output with an amplifier that might put
out
full power with 5 watts drive. Got a 10db 100w attenuator?

Hi All:

I'd like to find a 600L to pair up with my 100V. A working unit is
preferred, but not absolutely necessary. Does anyone have one that they'd
care to part with?

Jim
