[Central-Electronics] 160 meter operation

Hi Tom
There is always the great CE600L. My 20A has more than enough drive to run
the 600L to 600 watts input plus it's great to be no tune broadband. Many of
the high end linears such as the Alfa 76 though 86 take very little drive
(about 40 to 60 watts for 1500 output. My QRO HF 2500DX takes 32 watts drive
for 1500 out. I think it would easily do 1000 out with a solid 20 watts
drive. I haven't tried to drive it with the 20A but have reduced the drive
on my Icom 756 ProII to 20 watts and have seen 1KW out. The 4cx800 type
tubes (or the Russian equivalent GU-74)that are grid driven would work well
however they are rather spendy. The 600L uses a single 813 and it a great
old tube. They are still cheap (around 29 to 69 dollars) and a pair can
easily give 800 to 900 out if grid driven. There are some designs shown in
some of the older handbooks using 813s so you wouldn't have to reinvent the
wheel. Then there is always the 4cx250B which also has some designs from the
older handbooks. They are still available and reasonable in price. Someone
out there probably has a homebrew amp that would work great for you just
hanging around in the storage room. If you decide to brew one up yourself
there is lots of info on the net and older books to help out and it will be
a great memorable experience, with the resulting great sense of
accomplishment. I've built a number of amps in my younger days and it is
remembered as some of the most fun I have had in the hobby. Good luck and
have fun.

Subject: [Central-Electronics] 160 meter operation

I am thinking about building a 160m linear for my CE-20 and was wondering if
anyone has suggestions as such. My CE-20 puts out almost 20 watts stock. Any
current crop of linear amps capable of 160 able to be driven by only 20
watts?

Thank You
