Ooops!
Something I said about crystals is wrong. For CW you can use direct frequency crystals (such as Novice use), and these do bypass the balanced modulator. This eliminates any voice operation. What I did miss though is you can offset the crystal + or - from 9 Mhz to run phone on the ham bands. Pages 13-14 clarifies this in the 20A Instruction Manual.

Hi All,
The CE Reflector has been quiet for too long..
Those VFO's for the 10B and 20A are available. I see them on Ebay fairly often. Also look for the rare Lakeshore Bandhopper VFO, a superior product that works on the CE gear with NO adapting required. The BC-458 Command transmitter is the basis for all these VFO's. Also any VFO with a 5-5.5 Mhz output will give you 80M and 20M so long as the output amplitude is high enough, so solid state VFO's likely need an amplifier.
Look again at using a crystal on these CE rigs. The crystal option is for CW only since it bypasses the voice balanced modulator circuitry.
Good Luck,
Jim

I think you can use surplus FT-243 crystals. By the way, the VFOs are around. I've seen a couple at hamfests over the last two years. May need some work, though. I've also wondered about using a stable signal generator as a VFO, but I haven't tried it yet.

Does anyone know the winding specs if I want to build an 80 meter set of coils up and a source to order coil forms for this transmitter? Also I assume the chance of finding a matching VFO is pretty nil so does anyone know if International Crystal has the information for grinding crystals for CE products?
