I saw them as well, nice looking rigs. Probably the closest thing you
could ever hope to get along the lines of a 'new' 100V or 200V.
Considering what these units bring in even 'decent' overall condition,
the price seems most fair. Of course, they are on epay, so they could
quickly reach the realm of ridiculous in the view of many of us.
It's somewhat amusing and really makes you realize how old you're
getting, but many times I've seen people object to the price of a nice
old rig, mainly because they remember getting them for next-to-nothing
for so long. I've always been a pretty good packrat, hauled off my share
of stuff and still manage to find a deal now and then, but....nice rigs
are getting few and far between compared to just 10 years ago. ARC-5
gear is a perfect example, I'm still looking for some bits and pieces
for my station. They used to be everywhere, new or close, for a couple
dollars. Now, well...they're around, but nowhere near as plentiful - or
cheap. When you stop to think about it, how much radio does a kilobuck
buy you these days? A 'good' used ricebox perhaps? Considering the
fun-factor or the older gear, it really is a steal. Especially if you
use the 'dollars then/dollars now' comparison.
Nick sure does nice work. It's great that someone of his talents and
interest level ended up taking over the reigns for such a wonderful line
of gear. In a market of $5k-$7k Johnson desks and $25k KW-1s, these CE
transmitters are even more of a bargain.
