The information contained in this email is going to numerous amateur radio nets, government and non-government agencies, as well as various amateur radio news outlets.
Hello Everyone,
Tropical Storm Marco made landfall near the mouth of the Mississippi River around 600 PM CDT (2300 UTC) with maximum sustained winds of 40-mph.
At 8:00 PM EDT (0000 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Laura was located about 140-miles east of the western tip of Cuba with maximum sustained winds of 65-mph. It was moving to the west-northwest at 20-mph.
Intermediate Advisory 20A issued at 8:00 PM EDT (0000 UTC) states,“Strengthening is expected when the storm moves over the Gulf of Mexico, and Laura is forecast to become a hurricane by late Tuesday. Additional strengthening is forecast on Wednesday, and Laura could be near major hurricane strength when it approaches the coast”.
On a personal note, satellite imagery has shown Laura to be getting better organized. Additionally, the extremely warm waters of the Gulf (averaging 86ºF) and very low wind-shear, we can only hope and pray this storm doesn’t rapidly intensify once it enters the Gulf of Mexico the way Hurricane Katrina did 15 years ago!
If you live in the projected path of Laura, please listen closely to your state and local officials. Each Hurricane is different, so, never drop your guard. Forecasts can change. Let’s hope Laura will weaken just as Marco did!
The Hurricane Watch Net has tentative plans to activate Wednesday morning at 8:00 AM CDT (1300 UTC) on our primary frequency of 14.325.00 MHz. We will begin simultaneous operations on 7.268.00 MHz beginning at 4:00 PM CDT (2100 UTC). Once activated, we will remain in continuous operation, barring the loss of propagation, until perhaps midday Thursday. These are tentative plans and are subject to change. I will update this mailing list with any change to this plan and it will be posted on our website,www.hwn.org.
As with any Net Activation, we welcome your observed ground-truth data from those in the affected area. The information forecasters at the National Hurricane Center need includes Wind Speed, Wind Gust, Wind Direction, Barometric Pressure – if available, Rainfall, Damage, and Storm Surge. Measured weather data is always appreciated but we do accept estimated.
We are also available to provide backup communications to official agencies such as Emergency Operations Centers, Red Cross officials, and Storm Shelters in the affected area. We also collect and forward significant damage assessment data to FEMA officials stationed in the National Hurricane Center.
As always, we are praying and hoping for the best yet preparing for the worst.
Sincerely,
Bobby Graves – KB5HAV
Net Manager
