On August 23, 2011 at 1:51PM a magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in central Virginia.  Luckily no deaths and only minor injuries were reported.  In Maryland and Washington DC many buildings were damaged.  Luckily the damage was light but it could have been much worse.  One of the common themes I hear from people is that the commercial communications circuits (cellular, landline, and Internet) failed very shortly after the earthquake.  This outage wasn't caused by the earthquake but by usage of the system by many people trying to make phone calls.

Tomorrow, starting at 10:15 AM (local time) we'll participate in the global exercise.  Everyone should practice taking cover, communicating with their family using their family communication plans ( http://www.ready.gov/family-communications ) , and evaluating their emergency supplies where they are.

In many locations in California immediately following an earthquake many of the hams come up on their local repeaters and the ARES folks start taking damage reports.  I'd like to do something similar.  If you're available, please check into the CALV01 146.985 repeater and provide your location and a brief damage assessment.  Bonus points for originating a formal message and transmitting it to whomever we designate as the collector of the information (volunteers?).
