On April 28, 2002, LaPlata
<http://www.erh.noaa.gov/lwx/Historic_Events/apr28-2002/laplata.htm> and
areas of CALV were struck by an F4 tornado. Though there was no activation
for CALV ARES/RACES since we had no communication issue within our county.
However, CALV-ARES did deploy two groups of 5 CALV-ARES team members to
CHAS as ARES-MAT (Mutual Assistant Team) to assist with the communication
crisis that happen there. The tornado hit and severely damaged structure
communication located on radio towers at the county seat. CHAS EOC was left
inoperative by this F4 tornado.
Sending ARES-MAT is the desired solution when a disaster strikes in one's
area. The hams in the affective area are too busy taking care of their own
family and property to provide any EmComm support. Hence, sending trained
ARES teams from an area outside the effective area is the standard operating
procedure (SOP).
Shortly after this F4 tornado damaged CHAS structured communication leaving
normal communications inoperative. CHAS ARES/RACES immediately asked for
assistance from PRGE and CALV ARES teams to go to LaPlata to provide EmComms
for their county. ARES-MAT teams were sent and stayed on station for over
48-hours. ARES-MAT ended when commercial communication companies repaired
and/or replaced damaged coaxes and antennas caused by this tornado.
For information regarding tornado preparation please read this Ready.gov
article http://www.ready.gov/tornadoes .
Early spring is an excellent time to ensure you have made necessary
precautions and preparations for your family, home and amateur radio
equipment in case of any of natural or man-made disasters that can occur at
moment.
If you are not always prepared then you are never prepared
