Good morning,
It seems the professor has given us some homework to do in prep for the meeting Monday night. Looks like it could be fun.
PLease follow the directions to program your HT and you'll be ahead of the class. Bring the manual if you have some difficulties. In fact if you show up for the ARES Eyeball QSO session, we just might have time to see what your issue might be. Be sure to bring those call sign translation numbers from the web site shown below.
See ya'll Monday night.
tnx es 73, de

Jim,
Please pass along to your members coming to the APRS presentation.
-------------------
The APRS talk will demonstrate how any existing HT with a DTMF keypad
can be used to report position, and put APRS objects on the APRS map.
This lets 100% of ham volunteers at special events use APRS for field
data entry, not just the 10% that have APRS radios.
Anyone wanting to use this capability in their own HT at the ARES
meeting should pre-load their DTMF callsign into a DTMF memory on
their HT. Doing this one-time preparation will prepare your HT not
only for this meeting but for all future use of APRS Touchtone from
your radio.
If you dont know how to save and replay a DTMF string from your
radio's DTMF memory, now is the time to learn. Here is how to encode
your callsign into DTMF and prepare your radio for operations:
1) Go to http://www.retroscape.com/aprstt/ and translate your callsign into DTMF
2) Store your full DTMF callsign into your first DTMF memory
3) Store your shorter SUFFIX DTMF callsign into a second DTMF memory
Once this is done, you will be able to transmit your position, send
your callsign and status and even text messages from your own DTMF
radio. WB4APR will show you how.
For example, sending DTMF keys B25244* and then sending your preloaded
callsign from DTMF memory can place you on the map anywhere within 30
miles of your repeater to the nearest mile. Or sending the shorter
B913* and your call will place you at milemark 13 at a marathon, etc.
Or sending *13654# can report runner 654 at mile mark 13 in the same
marathon and the runner will show up on the APRS map.
See you Monday Night.
