I came across an interesting article today that I like to share with you.
Arlington, Virginia is seeking FCC licensed Amateur Radio operators to aid
the town in back up communications.

Back on 9/11, R.A.C.E.S. members from the Washington D.C. area spent 17
days, 24x7, supporting supply ops to the Pentagon. In recent years, Anne
Arundel, Charles and Prince George's Counties have supported their counties
when telephone service was unavailable in neighborhoods and when hospital
communications were down.

We never know if we will be called upon to support our local neighbors.
Fortunately for everyone these events seldom occur. However, it is critical
to keep yourself and equipment operational for that time when our services
may be requested. Checking into our weekly nets, participating in ARES
training and exercises are ways to ensure you will be prepared.

Amateur Radio does offer extra redundancy to structure communications that
many rely upon. This is why it is so important for us to stay prepared.
Anyway, thought you may like to read that local Arlington Government is
preparing to utilize hams if needed.
