Hi Dale, Thanks for your reply! I enjoyed your KW-2000B webpage as you
showed the before and after photos of your restoration. You are certainly a
master restoration expert. I hope you don't mind my asking some restoration
questions.
Out of curiosity, the KW-2000 cabinet looked like it had old glue or label
residue on it. What was it? Were you able to recover the original finish
or was it too scratched up, requiring repainting? I notice the trim ring
more closely matches the paint color in the "after" photograph, suggesting
repainting of one of the two. Can I assume the KW-2000 trim ring is metal?
The restored cabinet looks fabulous!
On the power supply panel with the transistor on it, what process did you
use to clean it up? It that a painted surface to give it an original
looking anodized look? Same question on the other power supply panel.
The power supply guts before and after is striking. It went from old and
tired to looking like new.
The top of the VFO chassis and inductor/transformer cans had enough pitting
on it but cleaned up well. Was this lightly sanded with a superfine
sandpaper to achieve that?
What a fine restoration on the KW-2000B! Thanks for putting the photos up.
Thanks for your kind comment about my ER article. That was the first time I
attempted to restuff a capacitor, and while I was expecting it to be a
disaster, it turned out really well. Yes, by marking the upper and lower
orientation, the two can halves lined up perfectly and the cut was nearly
impossible to see. I didn't expect that level of precision, and was
expecting something ugly. Yes, I would have put a colorful paper label like
those often seen in the old days, but I didn't have one to scan. I was
always like colorful labels. That's all right though, I don't see the cap
much.
Thanks. 73, Scott WA9WFA

Hi Scott,
I bought a KW-2000B from the UK some years back, along with the PS speaker.
All aluminum and the size of the KWM-2. A much better rig than the Atlanta
though; which I believe is similar to the Swan 350 with its drift issues and
free running 1st conversion. The 2000 series , like the Collins uses xtal
controlled 1st conversion, so it has the same stability and calibration on
all bands. I did have to build a buffer stage for the VFO though as (at
least on this rig) there was a delta between RX and TX frequencies. A fun
transceiver all in all and I enjoyed bringing it back to like new condition:

BTW, I enjoyed your ER article on restuffing cans. You and I do it exactly
the same way- including the scratch mark to ensure the base and can are
properly aligned when epoxied back together. I put a label on the top with
the date the can was redone.
