I used white polypropylene rod. 1/8" as I recall. McMasterCarr has it for
almost free:

I see that Amazon carries a lot of white rod also.
You might check with a 1/8" drill bit to make sure that is the correct
diameter. Cuts well with an Exacto knife. I thought for sure I must still
have some here, but a quick check did not locate it, or my wallet.

I used the white lollypop sticks cut to length. Also used a very tiny
amount of super glue on both cut ends. Keeps the end material from
flaring out.
My Ranger and Valiant had 5 missing ones when I got both of them back in
90's. Applied these sticks back then, and even with knob usage, they
haven't fallen out.
