Al, with due respect, it does not change anything in relation to linearity that the inductance is made variable instead of the capacitance.

As Fc = 1/(2psqrt(LC)) is basically a non-linear function (a 1/X one).

On the PTOs used by Collins and others, the inductor value rate of change have to be non-linear.

Same for the capacitance when it is the tuning element.
