"WECo was not broken away from AT&T"

Western Electric (WECo), Bell Labs, and American Bell (this name only
lasted about 6 months and was then renamed Information Systems) were
absorbed into AT&T. The majority of the WECo locations became known as
AT&T Technologies in 1983 actually prior to the divestiture 1/1/84. The
WECO manufacturing locations continued to pump out voice and data type
products for many years after 1/1/84 but unfortunately some were closed
or down sized several years later especially those making telephones.
With divestiture, there were a number of manufacturing changes that had
to be made to many products. Also, the common tag branding "Western
Electric" and "WECo" didn't exist anymore.

AT&T Technologies in the mid-90's became Lucent Technologies. Between
1/1/84 and probably through the mid-90's, there were so many
organizational changes I lost count. Sometimes you worked for two
different company organizations in the same month.

Lots of right and wrong info floating around the Internet.
