Good evening,
I seldom post on here because I am not much of a Boatanchor person. But I
enjoy reading the posts and remembering the rigs I have known since 1956.
A year ago, I was given a DX40 and a VF-1 to restore for a friend. I
worked all year and finally have the DX-40 on the air and it works well. I
can either use a crystal to control frequency, or an N3ZI DDS VFO. My
question is this: There is a 40M peaking coil in the driving chain, the
purpose of which is to enhance the harmonic content when driving the rig on
20 meters and above with the 7 MHz crystal or VFO. If I want to drive 20M
through 10M with the fundamental from the DDS, should I remove or short
across this coil?
2nd question: I have yet to start on the VF-1. I have a set of plans for
changing it over to a solid state VFO, basically just using the case, dial
and tuning cap. Externally it would seem to be the VF-1 when finished, but
is supposed to be more stable. What are your thoughts? Is it OK to
convert this? Have any of you done this conversion? Any advice?
Thanks very much and 73,
Dave, K4TO
