low RF signal...and that creates an output thats each of those frequencies,
as well as the sum and difference of the 2.

The 1st IF will allow a 455kc sample to be taken and amplified
so I think as long as the VFO is not super low in amplitude
so its near the incoming signal level of the 1st RF amp I 
dont think it matters. The excess is more or less clipped out
if I remember my theory correctly.
