Hi Scott,
RTFS! (Read the schematic carefully!)
The second (short) antenna connection does not bypass the input tuned
circuits, but rather feeds the tuned circuits from the "top" of the
tuned secondary coil rather than via a primary winding. This circuit
node in high-impedance, and is appropriate for a short antenna.
