Hi Gary,
I'm a little younger than you, but I remember aerosol cans of
crinkle paint in various colours. It came as a surprise to me when I
asked the owner of the local hardware store about crinkle finish paint
and he hadn't heard of it.
This is risky, it could be experimented with before using on a good
piece of gear. I've had some success with aerosol paint and then while
its still wet heating it with gentle hot air from a heat gun. If you
do find crinkle paint somewhere I might not be the only one here who is
interested in where it is still available.
