Scott,

Another advantage of this design that the other fellows didn't mention is calibration.  The tuning dial calibration for all of the "converter" bands is the same as that for the 80 meter base band, providing of course that the converters' crystals are on the correct frequencies.  So if, as in the Collins 75A-series receivers which use this scheme, you have dial calibration on your base band with marks on the dial every 1 kHz, you will also have the same calibration accuracy on all of the other bands.
