Renovated Radios Ending Operations
Location: Shelby Township, MI 48316
To all members of the antique radio community:
As of November 1, 2021, I will no longer be making parts for radios.
I’ve been making parts for nearly 20 years now, and I just can’t keep
doing this forever. Age is playing a big part in my decision, along with
a desire to do other things.
I know this is going to cause a problem for some, especially those who
are making a living repairing radios. But, after November 1, I’ll still
be selling Philco face plates and the metal spoked knobs for Zeniths
that Larry Bordonaro had made in the past. And, I’ll be selling off all
of the other knobs and rubber parts I have left until they are gone.
I plan to eventually sell the molds I have in stock, and the molds that
I had purchased from Larry.
I purchased Larry’s molds after he passed away, and he had a lot of
them. Several thousand. Most of what he did was make knobs on request,
one at a time. So his molds are for MANY different types of radios, but
single molds for making one at a time. There are also, along with the
molds, color mixes for making the knobs and buttons. Matching colors of
originals is the most time-consuming part of making parts. I plan to
sell Larry’s molds, along with the color mixes, separately from the
molds I have made. Larry’s molds will make parts for people who need
something that’s not usually available. Someone looking for a hobby
could make good money using these molds without spending a lot of time.
My molds, about 550 in total, all make multiple parts in one pour,
usually six or nine parts at a time. There are enough molds there to
make about 350 different parts, as you can see on my web site. I plan to
sell these molds, along with color mixes for common parts, and all the
masters I’ve made for making new molds. Someone could actually make a
modest living selling parts made with these molds.
I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who are capable of learning
how to make these parts. I’ve already done the hard part of
experimenting, designing, color mixing, and making masters from originals.
Over the last few years, I’ve given a lot of thought about how to end my
involvement in this endeavor, and I sure don’t want to leave people
hanging who depend on the parts. If you can determine what parts you
might need in the future, I suggest you put an order in as soon as
possible to give me time to make what you need before November 1. Then,
hopefully, before you need more, someone will have decided they would
have a go at making them.
