Hi Rob,
Maybe the main reason is keeping the legacy gear *original*. I am less
concerned about *all original* to support highest resale value. My
Ranger was a gift from an early "Elmer" (long since silent key) and I
want to keep is as he used it. As he aged and couldn't drive at night I
took him to club meetings and hamfests. We had a good time. After one
such trip the Ranger went home with me.
I made a plug for the 110 volt AC T-R out line on the back from an
appropriate defunct crystal can (the socket is not FT-243 size).
My DX-100 was already *modified* when I got it cheap at hamfest so more
mods are just irrelevant. I loaned it to new hams for a long while and
checked into QMN and Navy MARS nets with it. I paid $25 for it almost 40
years ago and it owes me nothing. Resale value - hah!
