[Boatanchors] Radio for new hams?

I was offered a good price on a R71 receiver when I asked a local
amateur about a receiver I could send up to a new amateur (VY0YL) just
to get started with. That led me into reviews and then to the Icom
radios that turn into bricks when the RAM battery fails (I know about
the replacement boards, but it is an added expense and delay). No one
to let that get in the way I found a thread on re-programming mindless
boards using a purpose made programming board.

Several hours later I'm thinking that maybe instead of a receiver
only I could find a good used XCVR, I kind of like the IC-751A, at a
good price and replace the RAM battery and re-program the board. When
VY0YL gets HF access (80% or better, or pass a 5WPM CW test on the
basic exam is required) with some help there would be a new amateur in
VY0 on the air.

Expanding on the idea, in retirement if possible I'd like to
encourage, train, and possibly equip new amateurs in the north, VE8 and
VY0 in particular. If I help them locate affordable starter equipment
and set up a station then it may be best for me to get familiar with
one or two XCVRs and try to equip them with the same gear to start
with. Years ago I liked the IC-751A (although I'm a Ten Tec fan).
With the RAM board battery issue would it be easier to find these in
otherwise good condition and at a good price.

Is there another radio, maybe 751A's aren't considered boat anchors
yet then this thread is OT, that would suit a new amateur, performs
well, and is affordable?
