That is a technique recommended by Pace.
I use a Pace desoldering system almost daily.
I have removed at least 30 pounds of solder that I now have in ingots.
I use their desoldering tweezers for surface mounted parts and have
replaced about a gallon of surface mounted electrolytic capacitors.
