Another technique I've used with large solder masses, is to heat the mass with a regular soldering iron. Then the hakko comes in to suck it all up.

Sometimes you can desolder okay by heating the pad on a pc card until all the solder is liquid then blowing it all away with compressed air.
  You have to have the board down in a utility sink and not care about damage to it.  This works if you're just stripping parts off a board.
