About 47 years ago, a guy around the corner from my Dad's mountain cabin
offered me a Valiant 1 in trade for climbing up his 100 foot tree and
removing a tribander. It was a nice rig - but I sold it when I needed
capital to buy a new R4C.
Got the chance to get another one this weekend and am loving it! It's a
Valiant 2 and you can see some Boatanchor porn here -
www.kkn.net/n6tr/Valiant.
When firing up the rig - it seemed to all be working alright - although the
output on 40 meters seemed a bit low (just over 100W). I was getting over
150 watts out on other bands. When I hooked up an antenna - I found out
that the 40 meter signal was really coming out on 20 meters.
After some debug - I found that the padding cap for 40 meters to the plate
tuning was not being swtiched in due to a fried contact on the band
switch. Similar problem on 160 as well - and it looks like I might be
doing some surgery on the wafer - trying to install new pins with #2
screws.
However, I wanted to ask if anyone here has a parts only Valiant that might
have a switch available? If so, perhaps I can work out a deal to buy that
instead - or have it as insurance before attempting surgery. This is the
wafer at the very end of the band switch that shorts out the taps on the
final coil and switches in padding caps for 40/80/160 to the plate tuning
cap.
Thanks!!
