Both the HO-13panadapter and HO-10 scope have a reputation for power
transformer failures. That might be the cause of the puff of smoke.

Subject: [Boatanchors] Anyone familiar with the HO-13 Scan Adapter ?
Anyone familiar with the HO-13 Scan Adapter? I have one that I have been
studying lightly, trying to see if there are any clues to it's IF
requirements. Also, hoping to learn any maintenance tips.
This one powered up, the trace came up nicely but a small swirl of smoke
started coming from the back top so I shut it down immediately. Fuse did
not blow. I see no signs of charring except two disk ceramic caps on the
scope base look like they darkened around their edges.
Manual anyone?
Thanks in advance for any information,
