Greetings, I am looking for a Spraque TO6A ( or TO6, TO5 maybe
others) spare red knob someone may have for my missing
Dishcharge/Test lever knob (also used on G,H,L,K range buttons) This
is the red knob.
I have been planning on machining one up, but that color of red is
very elusive. I have bought all sorts of items in what appears to be
a close match to the dark red. There never seems to be enuf of a
plastic chunk to get a knob out of......................a can opener
with near perfect red, but its knob just doesn't have enuf length to
make the knob..............magic markers with a red cap still won't
make a knob...........anyone need any red markers that are surplus to
my needs? Even my big box of knobs didn't help, found some close
matches but when turned down to size air bubbles in the plastic show up.
I have an alternative that may satisfy my need and that is to use a
close match marker cap that is somewhat transparent that a lamp
inside the knob would light up indicating that the lever is in the
Test position and to switch to Dishcharge position before touching
the 600 Volt charged test capacitor.
I have the whole thing pretty much all restored and looking pretty,
even sanded and buffed up the meter face and clear plastic dial, you
never know when to stop buffing, I get buffing and buffing and things
always get better (unless the buffer flings it across the room
scuffing along a concrete floor..........again). Sometimes plastics
or metals end up with a near perfect mirror finish. Then you are
forever worried about keeping it that way............like having a
polished mirror finish hammer and not being able to just toss it to
the ground but having to gently place it on a velvet cloth!
The only other elusive items to restore is finding a couple of caps
to make up one of the reference caps. Manual says "polyester film
2uF 1% 200VDC consists of 2 or 3 parallel capacitors"
Everytime I see a post where someone is looking for a knob, I am
reminded that I can too, sometimes you forget you can always ask for help.
