Hi Stan,
Have you tried a dedicated receive antenna with decent RDF (Receive
Directivity Factor)? It can  make a huge difference. I am using a the Shared
Apex Loop Array and  it often makes the difference between  uncopiable and
good copy when aimed at the station I  am QSOing or  positioning it so that
it's rear is towards a noise source- like a thunderstorm or QRM.
