I read about this before, as there was an article about Gleason’s radio monitoring hobby, years ago, in a book that catered to shortwave listeners.  It was either the WRTH, World Radio and Television Handbook, or Passport to World Band Radio.  The edition that I read this in was probably published in the ‘80s or ‘90s.

Maybe there are scans of these older books, online.
