 Using DOT 3 brake fluid also does a great job.

I'd like to thank whoever it was who&nbsp;suggested soaking in silicone.&nbsp;

Fiddling with an old RCA WA-44C audio generator, I found the rubber part that engages the tuning dial hard and shrunken to the point it didn't work.&nbsp;

After a day&nbsp;in hardware store silicone spray lubricant, it's soft and apparently back to its original size.
