What you want to do may depend partly on the power source.  I imagine
if you want to run the VFO on its own power supply, getting one that
powers mosfets will be easier to set up.  You might only need a gel
cell to run it.  Of course putting it back to original means building
up a real power supply which isn't a big deal if you have the parts,
but it's more involved than a low v. DC supply which might just be a
wall wart you have sitting around.  The mosfet deal might involve less
drift.  I have a EFJ 122 which is similar and I run it on its own
supply and it's okay, but I have to fire it up an hour or two ahead of
time so it can settle down.  I always have my VFOs on their own power
supplies so I can leave them on when I'm at home, apart from
transmitters.
