Thanks to all who have replied! All people I’ve come to respect over the years on these reflectors. 

Three in favor of original and one to try the mosfet first. I may try the mosfet just to have a comparison and then go ahead and restore it as my head/heart dictate. 

Interestingly Ken, the original conversion article claimed the mosfet version had more output, which goes against my supposition.  Mine is the aluminum version with the soldered tuning cap, although that one looks sturdy enough itself. It’s not a real cheapie. And I certainly respect both your and Dave Ishmael’s work with these units. 

And Ron I may well take you up on the offer of copying the manual, thanks!
