Also remember what shippers provide is not insurance in the traditional
sense. It is contents coverage and based on a certain amount by pound.

Their rates are established/approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission
similar to what movers provide. Anyone who has ever used a professional
mover and had a loss understand the concept. You can purchase additional
coverage but you better do what John says here.

There are companies that provide shipping insurance separate from common
carriers, but you should read their requirements for payment. I recall one
time trying to find the requirements for one of the popular common carriers
on how to pack and the web site sent me to three different pages across two
different servers and the instructions was very confusing. Then there is
coverage for overseas shipments, that is a different game altogether.

If you are a buyer, read the restrictions and specify that the shipper do
what is necessary to comply with the rules or they must refund the purchase
price. Send them a copy of the requirements.

You can purchase insurance from a second party insurance company, and if the
shipment is expensive you would be well served to do so. Just be sure the
shipper understands and the rules are part of your deal.

I'm pretty sure that the buyer of the damaged radio is correct:

* The shipping agreement is between the shipper and the seller. All
"contractual " arrangements are between those two, including payment and
paperwork.

* The seller did the packing.

Granted, the lack of care by the shipping companies is deplorable but it
is possible to ship for success. I've shipped dozens of sets over 20-30
yrs and never had one damaged. I double box all shipments and overstuff
the boxes with hard-to-compress padding.

While the seller may be being a jerk, they're probably correct in
stating that the responsibility for the claim headaches is with the
shipper.

Ship as you would have others ship unto you!
