Another school of thought.  When asked if they contain advertising, I would think you could truthfully say no.  After all, few if any of the companies are still in existence and those that are are not selling the equipment any more.  Heath still selling a DX 100?  Nope.  Hallicrafter isn't even in existence any more.  I would classify the "ars" as historical information and illustrations.  Advertising has to be offering something a company still offers in order to be advertising a product.  Otherwise old Sears catalogs some one collects, or old TV Guide could not ever be sent media or library rate.

I’ve shipped many QST CQ HAM RADIO and 73 magazines via Media Mail over the
years- never a problem.

They are technical journals - period.
