[Boatanchors] Always wanted a S-42 so it was time

There are some good resources on line for restoring one of these receivers. Holler if you'd like the links. They really are great receivers, and they're much easier to rebuild than an SX-28. Watch the audio transformer. On mine, it was shot and I had to replace it with a new Hammond that fit like a glove. I've heard this is not an uncommon failure.

Congrats on getting the SX-42! (you indicated it was a S-42 but I believe
it is really a SX-42, i.e. it has a crystal filter).  I've also got one
lurking in my ham shack waiting for restoration.  Looks nice - reading
between the lines (i.e. ..Unfortunately the seller turned it on ), I assume
that one or more of the electrolytics let out their smoke.  Bummer.  But
entirely predictable based on the age of the radio. Hayseed Hamfest has a
complete capacitor rebuild kit available by the way (about $55 USD - and
worth every penny of it).  Let us know how the restoration effort goes.
