[Boatanchors] Variable Inductors: how were they used and in what ???

Sounds like a Mallory Inductuner.  It was used in television sets way 
back when.  It offered continuous tuning from channel 2 (or a little 
below) up to channel 13.  This included FM broadcast and 2 meters.  It 
makes an interesting VHF converter for 6, 2, high band and FMBC

> I have a variable inductor that is about the size of a Collins PTO overall.  Has three tubes,  three sections of 1 inch roller inductors, totally shielded.  On the front it has gearing like the 51J3 (R388) receiver and has both course and fine tune.
