[Boatanchors] Variable Inductors: how were they used and in what ???

I have a variable inductor that is about the size of a Collins PTO overall.  Has three tubes,  three sections of 1 inch roller inductors, totally shielded.  On the front it has gearing like the 51J3 (R388) receiver and has both course and fine tune.

Measures about 3 in wide, 4 in tall, 8-10 inches long.  Manfactured by Mallory.


What i would like to know is whether anyone is familiar with the use of variable inductors during the war and if so, what was the application remembered?  Was any particular manufacturer or brand of equipment known to use them?  Was it used for varying frequency or mostly in test equipment ?   I can send pictures to anyone willing to jog their memories.
