[Boatanchors] A Cure for "The Silence of the Bands"

I've been away from actual ham QSOs for decades, thinking of rejoining, SSB on
all boatanchor rigs (BUT ... oh ,my, watching the band on my Airspy video display all the time too.)
I do scan the bands now though.

The question: what are the "steps" people use? What should I assume where to set my Airspy's
exact frequency? (Its well calibrated).
