I am thoroughly disappointed at the quality of research and information
contained in the linked page. It is just another bloody under-educated
journalist who knows bugger-all about chemistry, physics and electronics
repeating what some other equally educated dweebs have said. You should all
know that journalists live by getting bye-lines - who bloody cares if it's
anywhere near scientifically defensible?
What editorial process was there to even allow this kind of faecal matter to
get propagated?

CDs were sold to us
When Discs Die...
CDs were sold to consumers as these virtually indestructible platters, but
the truth, as exemplified by the disc rot phenomenon, is more complicated.
