It was reviewed in Nov 1966 QST. Price was described as "lower than usual for a factory-wired unit of this variety." Some features found in other sets were eliminated to get a low priced unit to market. "Price class: $160 less accessories." The power supplies (AC or DC) were accessories.

WRL ad in the same issue stated $199.95 for an economy base station package, $265 for a deluxe fixed package & $305 for the mobile package. Intended as fixed or mobile, with only LSB SSB operating mode. A curiosity was that 2 of the set's transistor were pressed into functioning as zener diode regulators for the transistor balanced modulator & the vfo.

It's tempting to consider the Duo as a predecessor to the Galaxy III and V series but the Galaxy V was on sale in the same issue, from Galaxy Electronics instead of the older WRL name. Galaxy III and V both apparently came out in or around 1964. Galaxy was Leo Meyerson's manufacturing firm grown out of WRL in 1962, and both were in Council Bluffs, Iowa. An earlier manufacturing firm, Globe Electronics, had grown from WRL & was sold in 1959.

My good friend W4MIL just gifted me a sweet World Radio Laboratories Duo-Bander 84. Chuck had restored it several years ago and it looks great! The front panel is very simple, two tone gray and aqua color, just a few knobs, and a speaker on the front. I’m going to check into the Sunday night Vintage SSB net out of North Dakota on 3860 with the Duo-Bander tonight and see how it works out.

I was curious about the Duo-Bander history. I see it came out around 1966. I wonder who designed it, and how popular it was. Was it a big seller? Chuck and I were musing over the two speed vernier dial, reminds us of Swan.

Does anyone have some history on this lil gal?
