[Boatanchors] NC-270

Long shot- but does anyone have a spare NC-270 speaker? Maybe the same was
used on the NC-155 and NC-190?

I just got in a very nice NC-270. The early version with the cabinet the
same color as the flip foot. Previous owner had been using it. I turn it on
and the audio is so distorted as to be almost unreadable.
Off goes the cabinet. I notice that one of the 4 caps in the can
electrolytic has been replaced by an axial lead piece (added wires to the
cap were not soldered, just wound around the short cap leads). This was the
audio output cathode bypass. It was not wired in correctly and as a result
the cathode bias resistor was not even in the circuit. So, I order a new 4
section can and meanwhile fix that error. Now the audio is better, but not
right and loud signals are causing FMing on SSB and chirp on CW.
Back into the radio and I see the VR tube is not lit. Voltage into the OA2
is 48VDC! Then I notice that the OA2 current limiting resistor has been
replaced. Supposed to be 2.2K. Likely, the same idiot had replaced it with
22K.
Now, it sounds great. Only wish it had SSB/CW AGC. Anyone done that?

Tnx,
Dale W4OP

Boatanchor clock story -
Back in the dark ages, a lab where I worked had an early cesium beam
frequency standard that occupied 1 or 2 racks and also drove an analog clock
dial somehow. Except this one was busted and would drop a little time every
now and then.
So many mornings the Facility Director would come in the back door near the
lab, look at this super-fancy lab clock, look at his shiny new Pulsar
(remember them?), mutter to himself, and adjust his Pulsar. Some time later
a tech would come in, glance at his Timex and reset the HP clock.
