Hams obsess about getting rid of vacuum and gas rectifiers.  Most of
the time it does more harm than good (except maybe for mercs.).  The
transformer was made for the filament load; the vac. rectifier has
some needed Vd, most important, it provides a softer start at power
on, although the addition of a choke on the filter input would
probably make that aspect unnecessary.
