[Boatanchors] Has anyone ever cut the glass top off a miniature tube to re-use the base?

Bob,

I did that for a remote VFO jumper that I needed.  Works well but 
soldering to the pins is tough as you suspect.  Use a lot of flux.  I 
then filled in the base with epoxy and that made it easier to install 
and remove.
