At least  here in the southeast for every 100 AM and  100 SSB stations, the
wide AM far outnumber the wide SSB stations. I really enjoy listening (and
working some) to the AMers but 20Kc wide is quite common with the vintage
gear judging from my Elecraft K3/P3.
I have no dog in the race, just commenting.

Alex.....why didn't you say anything about those SS stations that have set
their transmit bandwidth intentionally wide?
There are a lot more of those guys that are far too wide than AM stations!

Watching my spectrum analyzer that samples at 255 Msample/sec with 16-bit
output, I see many AM stations on 80 meters occupying 20-kHz of bandwidth. 
Of course both sidebands are identical and carry the same information!

BTW, I occasionally run a Viking Valiant and HQ-180 on AM.
