I've had a Swan 500CX for several years.   The web site at http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/hamradio/ is the only site devoted to Swan gear that I know of, and the Yahoo group has been active for several years.  

W4BYG is correct.  Really, in the 1960s and at least early 70s what ham who had a modern rig wasn't touching up their VFO during a QSO? 

Perhaps two or three years ago, I heard former Swan employee Stu K4BOV, who runs the Swan Tech Net on 40 meters, discussing drifting VFOs during a net.  As I recall, Stu said the 350 VFO was a problem Herb Johnson took very seriously and something Swan devoted considerable effort to trying to resolve, although I believe Stu indicated that Swan was never able to resolve the problem to its complete satisfaction.  I stand to be corrected by Stu, of course.

 Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ author ] To be fair, in the days of tube VFO's and receiver oscillators, almost all radios made only for the ham market drifted, Some worse than others, but most of them necessitated you retune several times throughout a QSO.(You really haven't had a QSO in ham radio until you followed a Heathkit DX-100 with the Cuban chirp, all over the 20 meter CW band).The tubes generated heat which over time changed the ambient temperatures within the chassis and therefore the L-C circuits, etc.For most who couldn't afford the most expensive commercial class gear, they had to live with it.Ray, 62 years and counting as W4BYGOn 10/27/2015 6:55 PM, Ken Kaplan wrote:> Funny story.
