Every now and then I witness something like the following at a hamfest
and I get a bit of a laugh. A couple years ago I was on hand when
Warren W9OWV (now SK) sold off one of his nice SX28s for $250. The
buyer was a rotund middle aged ham who pulled up in a pickup truck and
dropped the tail gate. He and a helper got out and each took one end
of the SX28 cabinet. "Be careful, it's real heavy" the buyer said,
the two of them moving the SX28 as if they were transporting an
injured person on a gurney. Warren and I looked at each other not
saying anything. This is why I work out with weights. Exercise also
helps recover from injuries.

My problem isn't weight (unless things get over 100 lbs) as much as it
is size or bulk. It helps to wear grip gloves, safety shoes, and a
lifting belt. Also plan the move, clear a route and have spots along
the way where you can set the cargo down in a hurry if necessary.
Use dollies wherever possible. There's a lot of 100 lb. ham gear that
could have benefited from thick front panels and grab bars.
